whyalpacas

Alpacas are usually disease-resistant animals, which lhelps owers vet bills.
Alpacas require minimal day-to-day care.
Alpacas have a pretty long and low maintenance reproductive life span.
Alpacas can be insured against loss.

Most of my friends are used to my coming up with new ventures and adventures, so my journey into the AlpacaLand has not really surprised anyone. In all honesty the question I am asked the most (after the obligatory "Do they spit?" one is "You are not going to start knitting are you?" Actually, I would love to learn and time will tell!

Why alpacas and not sheep or goats? I lost interest in goats after learning the males pee in their own beards to attract females...that did not work for me. Sheep are nice, but I wanted something with a bit more panache. When I met my first alpacas, I just knew they were for me! They struck me as somewhat otherwordly and my husband swears they were sent to earth to take me back to my true people.

Why alpacas are just about the best small farm animal imaginable...

The alpaca's feet are padded and are thus very easy on the land, they do not tear up everything as they graze. Up to 10 can graze on one acre!
The alpaca has a three compartment stomach helping it to convert grass and hay to energy very efficiently, so they eat less than cows, etc.
The alpaca does not usually eat or destroy trees, it just likes grass better.
The alpaca's rich poo is perfect for growing fruits and vegetables.
A herd of alpacas have a community poo pile in one area and making it easy to clean up and to collect and compost for fertilizer. Gotta love this one!
An alpaca produces enough fleece, in 22 gorgeous colors, each year to create several fashionista worthy sweaters!
They don't bite, head butt or kick (much). They worst is the aforementioned spitting.
Alpacas are relatively small and easy to handle even for one person.
Alpacas are intelligent, but not TOO clever or manipulative.
